Signs

There are some great signs here and we chuckle over at least one a day.
Some things to keep in mind:

-One thing is very telling about the people here and that is the fact that many many of their business names and signs refer to religion. Religion is very important to most people here.

-Ls and Rs are completely interchangeable here and spelling is really a moving target.

We were traveling to Blantyre last month and alongside the road we saw a little sandwich board style sign that said "Glass cutting works ahead". Hmmm we said and we watched for clues to what it meant. Well, several miles down the road we found the answer in an almost identical sign. Only one letter was different. "gRass cutting works ahead".
You know how in the summer the highways department mows the grass along the roads. Well, towards the end of the rainy season they do that here too only they do it by hand. Men sign up to cut a section and they do it with a slasher. It is a piece of metal (sometimes made from a stolen road sign) about a meter long and a couple of inches wide and bent a bit at the bottom. They just sharpen them on the pavement.

The most common vehicle on the road here is the minibus. The law says that they can't put any more than 3 people on a seat (not that they pay any attention to it) but I guess it must not say how many you can put behind... how many behinds.... And...note the sign.

We saw this cosmetics shop quite a while ago and I have been wanting a picture of it ever since. "With God everything is possible cosmetics shop" Classic!
