Majeti Park

Oh my goodness has it been a long time! I think I'd better get on the stick and get caught up.

The Shields (Burton & Patricia) took us out to Majeti Park while we were staying with them in Blantyre. This is them in front of a baobab tree in the park.

Elephants are always near the top of the list of animals we are hoping to see so when we came to an area that was freshly trampled and torn apart we knew we were close but all of a sudden there they were... right by the road! They were as startled as we were and this one was not happy to see us. When she flared her ears and started towards us, we got out of there.

This was definitely the closest we have been to a hippo. The river was really high because of heavy rains the night before and he was right there below us. They are HUGE!

and this was definitely the best photo op we have had with a cape buffalo. He is quite the impressive fellow.

There was a swinging bridge over one of the streams in the park and Elder Prete thought he needed a picture...

The Shire (pronounced Sheeree) river. Liwonde Park where we stayed last year is also on this same river. February when this picture was taken is about in the middle of the rainy season and we had had a really heavy rain the night before so it was pretty wild.

Hard to tell but there is a baby hippo (you can see her ear) on the other side of this mother. She had her head up resting on the mother's back but by the time I got the camera up this is all I got.

We got to go to Majeti again with the Blantyre zone and we found three different groups of elephants. This mother and young one weren't the slightest bit worried that we were there and we got to watch them for quite a while before they wandered off across the road in front of us.
