As we were walking home from the church late one afternoon, we followed these women for quite a ways. I love this image. They weren't in any hurry and just were chatting as they strolled along (with these immense bundles on their heads!!!).

Some of the same women we were following. The bundles are full of corn cobs with the kernels shelled off. They are taking them home to burn in their little stoves to cook with. The cloth they are tied up in is called a chitenje (chee TEN jay) and almost every woman always wears one around her like a wrap-around skirt. That is also what they carry their babies and toddlers on their backs in. If they are carrying a purse or bag, they will have an extra one in there, just in case. People seldom carry things in their hands or arms here.
